About the Center
The South Dallas Cultural Center became
a reality through the persistent efforts of key individuals
in the African-American community. They encouraged the City
of Dallas to develop a multi-purpose arts facility in South
Dallas to serve the African American artistic community. Under
the leadership of City officials and Park Board members, funds
were allocated through the 1982 bond program to provide the
construction of the $1.5 million, 24,000 square-foot facility
which is located diagonally across from the Fair Park Starplex.
The South Dallas Cultural Center's facility
features a 120-seat black box theater; a visual arts gallery;
studios for dance; two-dimensional arts; ceramics; printmaking;
and photography. The Center also has a full service digital
recording studio and an education program in digital recording
technology for youth and adults. Classes held in these studios
help inspire in both the young and old love of art from the
African Diaspora. All instructors are professionals with excellent
credentials in their disciplines.
Summer Arts at the Center, a 5-week arts
institute for South Dallas school-aged children, is the perfect
solution to the question: What do you do with a highly creative
child in the Summer? This multi-disciplinary arts institute
is tought by local arts professionals with special visiting
artists providing that "little extra pizzazz!"
