The South Dallas Cultural Center is an ideal place for creative, fun, and educational activities for children. Check the events calendar for specific dates and times, because there is always something going on for youth at the SDCC.

Soul Children’s Theater

Soul Children's Theater, housed at the South Dallas Cultural Center, provides high-quality, family-oriented theater and innovative educational programs aimed at creating a soulful understanding and appreciation of, and reconnection to the African Diaspora. Summer Arts at the Center
This five week arts institute for South Dallas school-aged children is the perfect solution to the question, “what do you do with a highly creative child in the Summer?” The multi-disciplinary arts institute is taught by local arts professionals with special visiting artists.

Fall 2009 Cultural Center Classes
SDCC classes for adult and children begin on September 26, 2009. For fee information and registration questions please call 214-939-2787. All classes must meet minimum enrollment.

LITERACY CLASSES

  • Gwendolyn Brooks Reading Club
    The South Dallas Cultural Center (SDCC) proudly partners with TARGET to bring the Gwendolyn Brooks Reading Club to SDCC every Saturday from 10 am to noon! This unique children’s reading club exposes children ages 5 through 18 to the literary works of African American award winning writers while enhancing the experience with a myriad of arts activities. It's free and a lot of fun! We welcome young readers, but won’t turn the old ones away! What better way to encourage a child to read than in the total arts environment offered at SDCC!
DANCE CLASSES
Get in shape this spring by dancing the dances of the African Diaspora!

SELF IMPROVEMENT CLASSES

  • Capoeira
    Os Malandros De Mestre Touro trains youth and adults in the art of Capoeira Angola de Sao Bento Grande. This program strives to restore and maintain the moral and cultural heritage and strength of African communities through the practice of Capoeira.
  • Sistas in The Light
    This course provides you tools to order a healthier lifestyle. Learn the benefits of various alternative and natural modalities that help minimize disease, alleviate stress and tension and maintain you and your family’s ongoing wellness.

 

VISUAL ART CLASSES

  • Printmaking for Adults
    This class is designed for enjoyment and learning. All printing techniques explored. Minimum enrollment 10 students. Maximum enrollment 15 students Classes begin as soon as minimum enrollment is made.
  • Quilting & Fiber Arts
  • Painting & Drawing for Youth

MUSIC CLASSES

  • African Drumming for the beginner (all ages)
    Students will learn traditional West African rhythms and will have an opportunity to play for dance classes as they learn!
  • By special arrangement – Digital Recording Technology (15+)
